अथातः छर्ब्रिहृद्रोगतृष्णाचिकित्सितं व्याख्यास्यामः । इतिहस्माहुरात्रेयादयो महर्षयः ।। १ ।।
We will now expound Chardi, Hrdroga, Trishna chikitsa- treatment of Vomiting, heart diseases and thirst; thus said atreya and other great sages. (1)
Chardi chikitsa – treatment of Vomiting
आमाशयोत्क्लेशभवाः प्रायः छर्यो हितं ततः । लङ्घनं प्रागृते वायोः – वमनं तत्र योजयेत् ।। २ ।।
Since vomiting is generally produced by agrravation of the doshas, in the amasaya ( stomach), langhana, ( fasting), is beneficial in the beginning, except in that of vata origin. (2)
बलिनो बहुदोषस्य वमतः प्रततं बहु । ततो विरेकं क्रमशो हृद्यं मद्यैः फलाम्बुभिः ।। ३ ।।
क्षीरैर्वा सह स ह्यूर्ध्वं गतं दोषं नयत्यधः । शमनं चौषधं रूक्षदुर्बलस्य तदेव तु ।।४।।
For those who are strong, who have great aggravation of doshas and too many vomitings continuously, vomiting should be induced (by the use of drugs); it should be followed next by purgation therapy, the purgative drug administered mixed either with wines which are pleasant (liked by the patient), fruit juices or milk, that (purgation) will bring the doshas downward; for those who are wasted and weak, samana treatment (palliative) only should be administered. (3-4)
परिशुष्कं प्रियं सात्म्यमन्त्रं लघु च शस्यते । उपवासस्तथा यूषा रसाः काम्बलिकाः खलाः ॥ ५ ॥
शाकानि लेहा भोज्यानिरागषाडवपानकाः । भक्ष्याः शुष्का विचित्राश्च फलानि स्नानघर्षणम् ॥६॥
गन्धाः सुगन्धयो गन्धफलपुष्पान्नपानजाः । भुक्तमात्रस्य सहसा मुखे शीताम्बुसेचनम् ।।७।।
Ideal foods are those which are dry (devoid of moisture), liked, accustomed and easily digestable; Fasting, soups, juice of meat, kambalika ( sour liquid made from dadima fruits, tubers and paste of sasame), khala (syrup of fruits containing solid portion of curds in addition), vegetables, lictuaries, eatables (snacks), raga, sadava and panaka (syrup), confections and fruits of various kinds which are dry; bath and massaging the body, wearing of sweet smelling perfumes and flowers, foods and drinks processed with fragrant fruits and flowers, sudden sprinkling cold water on the face immediately after meals (all these are beneficial to stop vomiting ). (5-7)
Vataja chardi chikitsa
हन्ति मारुतजां छर्दिं सर्पिः पीतं ससैन्धवम् । किञ्चिदुष्णं विशेषेण सकासहृदयद्रवाम् ॥८॥
व्योषत्रिलवणाढ्यं वा सिद्धं वा दाडिमाम्बुना | सशुण्ठीदधिधान्येन पीतं तुल्याम्बु वा पयः ।। ९ ।।
व्यक्तसैन्धवसर्पिर्वा फलाम्लो वैष्किरो रसः । स्निग्धं च भोजनं शुण्ठीदधिदाडिमसाधितम् ।
कोष्णं सलवणं चात्र हितं स्नेहविरेचनम् ।।१०।।
Vomiting casused by maruta (vata) gets cured by ingestion of warm ghee mixed with saindhava, especially that, accompanied with cough and palpitation; that ( ghee ) mixed with more of vyosa and trialvana (three salts) or that prepared with juice of dadima, sunthi, dadhi and dhanya; or drinking milk mixed with equal quantity of water, juice of sour fruits or juice of meat of viskira birds mixed with a little more of saindhava and ghee; food which is made unctous (mixed with ghee or oil), and processed with sunthi, dadhi, and dadima (are beneficial). Purgative recipes prepared with fatty materials (oil or ghee), mixed with salt and administered warm is suitable (in vomiting of vata origin) . ( 8-10)
Pittaja chardi chikitsa
पित्तजायां विरेकाय द्राक्षेक्षुस्वरसैस्त्रिवृत् । सर्पिर्वा तैल्वकं योज्यं वृद्धं च श्रेष्मधामगम् ॥ ११ ॥
ऊर्ध्वमेव हरेत् पित्तं स्वादुतिक्तैर्विशुद्धिमान् । पिबेन्मन्थं यवागूं वा लाजैः समधुशर्करैः ॥
मुद्गजाङ्गलजैरद्याद्व्यञ्जनैः शालिषष्टिकम् ॥१२॥
In vomiting caused by pitta, trivrit, along with draksa and juice of sugarcane or tilvaka sarpi (ghrta) should be used for producing purgations; if the aggravated dosha (pitta) is residing in the seat of slesma (kapha) it should be eliminated through the upper route itself (by producing vomiting) using drugs which are sweet or bitter; the patient should drink mantha (paste of flour) or yavagu (gruel) of laja mixed with honey and sugar, eat the mess of rice or sastika rice along with condiments prepared from mudga or meat of animals of desert-like regions. (11-12)
मृद्धृष्टलोष्टप्रभवं सुशीतं सलिलं पिबेत् । मुद्गोशीरकणाधान्यैः सह वा संस्थितं निशाम् ।।
द्राक्षारसं रसञ्चेक्षोर्गुडूच्यम्बु पयोऽपिवा ||१३||
He should drink water warmed by immersing heated balls of mud and then cooled, or water in which mudga, usira kana and dhanya are soaked and kept overnight; or juice of draksa or iksu or guduchi or drink even milk. ( 13 )
जम्ब्वाम्रपल्लवोशीरवटाश्वत्थाङ्कुरोद्भवः । क्वाथः क्षौद्रयुतः पीतः शीतो वाविनियच्छति ।।१४।।
छर्दि ज्वरमतीसारं मूर्छा तृष्णां च दुर्जयाम् । धात्रीरसेन शीतं वा पिबेन्मुद्द्रदलाम्बु वा ।। १५ ।। कोलमज्जासितालाजमक्षिकाविकणाञ्जनम् । कोलास्थिमज्जास्त्रोतोजलाजोत्पलरजांसिवा ॥१६॥
लिह्यात् क्षौद्रेण पथ्यां वा द्राक्षां वा बदराणिवा | पिबेच्छीताम्बुना शालिस्वर्णगैरिकजं रजः ॥
पिष्टंवा चन्दनद्राक्षामांसीसेव्याम्बुगैरिकम् ।।१७।।
शालितण्डुलतोयेन पिबेद्वाससितामधु । मधूकमधुकद्राक्षाकमलामलकाम्बुदम् ॥ १८ ॥
ससारिवापरूषाक्षं मूर्वां वा माक्षिकान्विताम् । मधुकं सात्मगुप्तं वा शीतं धात्रीरसेन वा ॥ १९ ॥
Decoction or cold infusion prepared from tender leaves of jambu and amra, usira, a sprouts of vata and asvattha, taken as a drink cures vomiting, fever, diarrhoea, fainting and thirst which are difficult to cure. He should drink the decoction of split mudga, mixed with juice of dhatri or cold infusion of mudga. Lick with honey the powder of kolamajja, sita, laksa, maksikavit (honey), kana and anjana; or lick with honey, the powder of kernel of seeds of kola, srotaja, laja and utpala; powder of pathya or draksa or badara, or drink cold water mixed with the powder of sali and svarnagairika or drink water mixed with paste of chandana, draka, mamsi, sevya, ambu and gairika; or drink rice-wash mixed with powder of madhuka, inadhuka draksa, kamala, amalaka, ambuda, sariva, parusa and aksa along with sugar and honey; or drink the decoction of murva mixed with honey; or of madhuka and atmagupta or of sita (chandana) with juice of dhatri. (14-19)
Kaphaja chardi chikitsa
कफजायांवमेन्निम्बकृष्णापिण्डीतसर्षपैः । युक्तेन कोष्णतोयेन दुर्बलं चोपवासयेत् ॥ २० ॥
In vomiting caused by kapha, more vomiting should be induced by drinking warm water mixed with (powder of) nimba, krsna, pindita (madana phala) and sarsapa; if the patient is weak, he should be made to fast. ( 20 )
आरग्वधादेर्निर्यूहं शीतं क्षौद्रयुतं पिबेत् | त्रिफलाकणचव्याद्वा पेयां पत्रैः करञ्जजैः ॥ २१ ॥
मन्थान्यवैर्वा बहुशश्छर्दिघ्नौषधभावितैः । कफघ्नमन्नं हृद्यं च रागाः सार्जक भूस्तृणाः ॥२२॥
He should drink the decoction of drugs of aragvadhadhigana (chapter 16 of sutrasthana) cooled and mixed with honey; or that of triphala, kana and chavya mixed with honey.
Drink peya (thin gruel) processed with leaves of karanja; or mantha (solution of flour) of yava macerated many times with juice of drugs which cure vomiting.
Consume food which subdues kapha and is pleasing to him and drink raga (sweet drinks) processed with arjaka (kuteraka) and bhutma (21-22)
लीढं मनश्शिलाकृष्णामरिचं बीजपूरकात् । स्वरसेन कपित्थाच्च सक्षौद्रेण वमिं जयेत् ॥ २३ ॥
समुस्तां मधुना शृङ्गीं कोलाम्लं वा सजाम्बवम् । तद्वद्विडङ्गत्रिफलाकृमिघ्नपरिपेलवम् ॥ २४ ॥
तद्वदुरालभां खादेत् कपित्थं त्र्यूषणेन वा ।
(powder of) manassila, krsna and maricha mixed with juice of bijapura, kapittha and honey and licked cures vomiting; or that of musta and srngi with honey or kolamla with the juice of jambu; similarly, vidanga, triphala, krimighna and paripelava; likewise licking duralabha, kapittha and tryusana (all with honey ). (23-24)
अनुकूलोपचारेण याति द्विष्टार्थजाशमम् ॥ २५ ॥ कृमिजा कृमिहृद्रोगगदितैश्चभिषग्जितैः । यथास्वं
Vomiting caused by disliked things, gets relieved by indulgence in convenient comforts (things liked); that due to worms (internal parasites) subsides by treatments prescribed for heart diseases caused by worms; and the remaining varieties (of vomiting) by appropritate treatment of the causative diseases. (25-26)
त्वरमाणो जयेच्छर्दिं प्रसक्तामनुबन्धिनीम् । कोष्ठाश्रयमहामर्मपीडाकरतरा हिसा ॥ २७ ॥
Vomiting which is continuous and which is a follower (secondary to other diseases) should be cured quickly, for it is going to cause great distress to the chief vital organ (the hridaya-heart) located in the trunk. (27)
नचान्नेन विना कायस्तन्मयो वर्ततेऽपिच । धातुक्षयोऽतिवमथौ समीरणसमीरणात् ॥ २८ ॥
नियतं जायते तस्माद्भुतं तत्र प्रयोजयेत् । प्रच्छर्दनातियोगोक्तं क्रमं स्तम्भनबृंहणम् ॥ २९ ॥
सर्पिर्गुडान् रसान् क्षीरं घृतं कल्याणजीवनम् । धान्वन्तरं त्र्यूषणं वा दोषदेहानुरोधतः ।।३०।।
The body canot survive without foods and is sustained only by it, by too much of vomiting, depletion of dhatus as well as aggravation (increase) of samirana (vata) both take place invariably; hence treatment suggested in excess emesis therapy (chapter 3 of kalpasthana) such as stambhana (control of vomiting) and brimhana (nourishing) should be adopted quickly; recipes such as sarpiguda should be used; meat juice, milk, kalyana ghrta, jivaniya ghrta, Dhanvantara ghrta or Tryusanadi ghrta should be used appropriate to the dosha and deha (body) of the patient. (28-30)
हृद्रोगचिकित्सितम् । परिशिष्टाश्चतत्कृताश्च तथामयाः ।। २६ ।।
Hridroga chikitsa – treatment of Heart diseases
Vataja hridroga chikitsa
हृद्रोगे वातजे तैलं मस्तुसौवीरतक्रवत् । पिबेत्सुखोष्णं सबिडंगुल्मानाहार्तिजिच्चतत् ॥ ३१ ॥
तैलं च लवणैः सिद्धं समूत्राम्लं तथागुणम् ।
In Hrdroga caused by vata, the patient should drink warm oil processed with mastu, sauvira or takra mixed with bida; this cures heart diseases caused by vata as well as abdominal tumors, distention of abdomen. Medicated oil prepared with lavanas (salts) cows urine, amla (fermented rice gruel) so possesses the same properties. ( 31 )
बिल्वं रास्त्रां यवान् कोलं देवदारु पुनर्नवम् ॥ ३२ ॥
कुलत्थान्पञ्चमूलं चपक्त्वा तस्मिन्जले पचेत् । तैलं तन्नावने पाने बस्तौ च विनियोजयेत् ||३३ ||
Bilva, rasna, yava, kola, devadaru, punarnava, kulattha and panchamula (brhat) are boiled in water and decoction prepared, to which oil is added and medicated oil prepared. This is used for nasal drops, drinking and enema. (32-33 )
शुण्ठीवयस्थालवणकायस्थाहिङ्गुपौष्करैः । पथ्ययाच शृतंपार्श्वहृद्वुजागुल्मजिद्घृतम् ।।३४ ।।
Medicated ghee prepared with decoction of sunthi, vayastha, (amlaka), lavana, kayastha (haritaki), hingu, pauskara and pathya and ghee, cures pain in the flanks and heart and abdominal tumors. (34)
सौवर्चलस्य द्विपले पथ्यापञ्चाशदन्विते । घृतस्य साधितः प्रस्थो हृद्रोगश्वासगुल्मनुत् ||३५ ॥
Two pala of sauvarchala, fifty pala of pathya and one prastha of ghee – are cooked and medicated ghee prepared. This cures heart diseases, dyspnoea, and abdominal tumors. ( 35 )
दाडिमं कृष्णलवणं हिङ्गुशुण्ठ्यम्लवेतसम् । अपतन्त्रकहृद्रोगश्वासघ्नं चूर्णमुत्तमम् ॥३६॥
Powder of dadima, krsnalavana, hingu, sunthi and amlavetsa is best to cure tetanus, heart diseases and dyspnoea. (36)
पुष्कराह्वशठीशुण्ठीबीजपूरजटाभयाः | पीताः कल्कीकृताः क्षारघृताम्ललवणैर्युताः ।।
विकर्तिकाशूलहराक्काथ: कोष्णश्च तद्गुणः ॥ ३७॥
Puskarahva, sathi, sunthi, root of bijapura and abhaya are made into a paste, mixed with kshara, ghrta, amla and lavana and consumed. This cures cutting pain in the rectum, similarly their ( of these drugs) warm decoction also has the same properties. ( 37 )
यवानीलवणक्षारवचाजाज्यौषधैः कृतः । सपीतदारुबीजाह्वपलाशशठिपौष्करैः ॥ ३८ ॥
पञ्चकोलशठीपथ्यागुडबीजाह्वपौष्करम् । वारुणीकल्कितं भृष्टंयमके लवणान्वितम् ॥ ३९ ॥ हृत्पार्श्वयोनिशूलेषु खादेत् गुल्मोदरेषु च ।
Yavani, lavana, kshara, vacha, ajaji, ausadha, pitadaru, bijahva palasa, sathi, and pauskara; or panchakola, sathi, pathya, guda, pauskara bija – are made into a paste with varuni (beer) fried in yamaka (mixture of any two fats-ghee or oil) and mixed with salt (saindhava). This recipe should be partaken in case of pain of the heart, flanks, vaginal tract and also in tumors and enlargement of the abdomen. (38-39)
स्त्रिग्धाश्चेह हिताः स्वेदाः संस्कृतानिघृतानिच ॥ ४० ॥
लघुना पञ्चमूलेन शुण्ठ्या वा साधितं जलम् । वारुणीदधिमण्डं वा धान्याम्लं वा पिबेत्तृषि ॥४१॥
सायामस्तम्भशूलामे हृदि मारुतदूषिते । क्रियैषा सद्रवायामप्रमोहे तु हिता रसाः ।।४२ ॥
स्नेहाढ्यास्तित्तिरिक्रौञ्चशिखिवर्तकदक्षजाः । बलातैलं सहृद्रोगी पिबेद्वा सुकुमारकम् ॥ ॥४३ ।।
यष्ट्याह्वशतपाकं वा महास्त्रेहं तथोत्तमम् । रास्त्राजीवकजीवन्तीबलाव्याघ्रीपुनर्नवैः ॥४४॥
भाङ्गस्थिरावचाव्योषैर्महास्त्रेहं विपाचयेत् । दधिपादं तथाम्लैश्च लाभतः सनिषेवितः ।। तर्पणो बृंहणो बल्यो वातहृद्रोगनाशनः ॥ ४५ ॥
In this disease, sudation therapy using fatty materials and medicated ghee are beneficial; if the patient feels thirst, he should drink water boiled with laghu panchamula or sunthi, or of varuni (beer) or dadhi (curds) or dhanyamla (fermented gruel of corns); the above are the methods of treatment in heart disease caused by vata, accompanied with feeling of expansion ( dilatation), loss of function, pain and symptoms of ama. If it is accompanied with increased rate, feeling of dilatation or expansion and severe delusion, then juice of meat of (birds such as tittiri, kraunca, sikhi, vartaka or daksa, mixed with more of the ghee is beneficial. That patient should drink Balataila, Sukumara taila, Yasti taila cooked a hundred times, or Mahasneha (mixture of all four fats), in the maximum doses. Mahasneha is cooked with rasna, jivaka, jivanti, bala, vyaghri, punarnava, bharangi, sthira, vacha and the vyosa, mixed with one-fourth part of dadhi (curds) and sour substances as many as available. This recipe procides nourishment, growth and strength and also cures heart diseases of vata origin. (40-45)
Notes: – Bala taila is described in vatavyadhi chikitsa (chapter 23), sukumara taila in vridhi chikitsa (chapter 15) Satapaki yasti taila in vatarakta chikitsa (chapter 24) and Mahasneha in vatavyadhi chikitsa (chapter 23).
Tryusanadi ghrita
त्र्यूषणत्रिफलापाठामधूकं मधुकं त्रुटी | पञ्चमूलं लघु बले मेदे ऋद्धिः शतावरी ॥४६॥
कण्डूकरी तामलकी जीवकं चाक्षसंमितैः । तैः पचेत् सर्पिषः प्रस्थं दनः प्रस्थेन माहिषात् ॥४७॥
युक्तं सिद्धं च मधुना तन्निहन्ति निषेवितम् । हृत्पाण्डुग्रहणीदोषकासश्वासहलीमकान् । ॥४८ ।।
One aksa each of tryasana, triphala patha, madhuka, madhuka, truti, laghu panchamula, the two bala, the two meda and rddhi, satavari kantakari, tamalaki, jivaka, are boiled and decoction prepared; to this are added one prastha each of ghee and dadhi (curds) obtained from buffalos milk and medicated ghee prepared. This recipe used with honey cures heart diseases, anaemia, diseases of duodenum, cough, dyspnoea, and halimaka (advanced stage of jaundice). (46-48)
दीप्तेऽग्नौ सद्रवायामे हृद्रोगे वातिके हितम् । क्षीरंदधि गुडः सर्पिरौदकानूपमामिषम् ।।४९ ।।
एतान्येव च वर्ज्यानि ह्रद्रोगेषु चतुर्ष्वपि । शेषेषु स्तम्भजाड्यामसंयुक्तेऽपिच वातिके ।।
कफानुबन्धे तस्मिंस्तु रूक्षोष्णामाचरेत्क्रयाम् ॥५०॥
For patients of heart diseases of vata origin, accompanied with increased rate and (feeling of) dilatation and having good digestive capacity, milk, curds, jaggery, ghee and meat of animals living in water and marshy regions are suitable (as food), whereas these are forbidden in the remaining four varieties (of heart diseases) and even in that of vata origin when accompanied with loss of function, decreased rate, and symptoms of ama. If kapha happens to be the secondary dosha, then treatment should be dry (causing dryness) and hot (increasing heat). (49-50)
Pittaja hridroga chikitsa
पैत्ते द्राक्षेक्षुनिर्याससिताक्षौद्रपरूषकैः । युक्तो विरेको हृद्यः स्यात् क्रमः शुद्धे च पित्तहा ॥५१॥
क्षतपित्तज्वरोक्तं च बाह्यान्तः परिमार्जनम् | कट्वीमधुककल्कं च पिबेत् ससितमम्भसा |॥५२॥
श्रेयसीशर्कराद्राक्षाजीवकर्षभकोत्पलैः । बलाखर्जूरकाकोलीमेदायुग्मैश्च साधितम् ॥५३॥
सक्षीरंमाहिषंसर्पिःपित्तहृद्रोगनाशनम् । प्रपौण्डरीकमधुकबिसग्रन्थिकशेरुकाः ॥५४॥
सशुण्ठीशैवलास्ताभिः सक्षीरं विपचेत् घृतम् । शीतं समधु तच्चेष्टं स्वादुवर्गकृतं च यत् ।।
बस्तिं च दद्यात् सक्षौद्रं तैलंमधुकसाधितम् ॥५५॥
In heart diseases of pitta origin, inducing purgations by using decoction of draksa, iksumiryasa (juice of sugarcane) sita ( sugar), ksaudra (honey) and parusaka is good to the heart. After such as purification, other measures which subdue pitta should be adopted, such as external therapies ( oil massage, bath etc ), and internal therapies (purgation etc) described in ksata (injury to chest) and pittajvara (fever of pitta origin). Paste of katvi and madhuka dissolved in sugar water should be drunk.
Medicated ghee prepared with sreyasi, sarkara, draksa, jivaka, rsabhaka, utpala, bala, kharjura, kakoli and the two meda (each equal in quantity for preparing decoction), and buffalo’s milk and ghee cures heart diseases of pitta origin.
Medicated ghee prepared with prapaundarika, madhuka, bisa granthi, kaseruka, sunthi, saivala along with milk and ghee. This ghee is suitable to be taken with honey; similarly, that (ghee) prepared with the groups of drugs of sweet taste.
Enemas should be given with oil processed with madhuka and mixed with honey. (51-55)
Kaphaja hridroga chikitsa
कफोद्भवे वमेत्स्विन्नः पिचुमन्दवचाम्भसा | कुलत्थधन्वोत्थरसतीक्ष्णमद्ययवाशनः ।।५६ ।।
पिबेच्चूर्णंवचाहिङ्गुलवणद्वयनागरात् । सैला यवानककणा यवक्षारात् सुखाम्बुना ।।५७।।
फलधान्याम्लकौलत्थयूषमूत्रासवैस्तथा क्वाथं तथाभयाशुण्ठीमाद्रीपीतद्रुकट्फलात् ।।५८ ।। ।
पुष्कराह्वाभयाशुण्ठीशठीरास्त्रावचाकणात् ॥
In heart disease of kapha origin, after making the patient perspire, vomitings should be induced by administering decoction of picumanda and vacha; the patient should partake food prepared with kulattha, juice of meat of animals of desert like regions; strong alcoholic drinks and yava (barley); powder of vacha, hingu, the two lavana nagara, ela, yavanaka, kana and yavakshara to be consumed with warm water, or with fruit juice, sour gruel, soup of kulattha, cows urine or asava (fermented decoction) or drink the decoction of puskarahva, abhaya, sunthi, rasna, vacha and kana or of abhaya sunthi madri, pitadru and katphala. (56-58)
क्वाथे रौहीतकाश्वत्थखदिरोदुम्बरार्जुने | सपलाशवटे व्योषत्रिवृच्चूर्णान्विते कृतः ॥ ५९॥
सुखोदकानुपानः स्याल्लेहः कफविकारहा। लेष्मगुल्मोदिताज्यानि क्षारांश्च विविधान् पिबेत् ।। ६० ।।
प्रयोजयेच्छिलाह्वं वा ब्राह्मं चात्र रसायनम् । तथामलकलेहं वा प्राशं वागस्त्यनिर्मितम् ॥६१ ॥
Decoction of rohitaka, asvattha, khadira, udumbara, arjuna, palasa and vara is added with powder of vyosa, and trivrit, is taken as a drink followed with warm water as an afterdrink. This recipe cures all the diseases of kapha origin.
Medicated ghees and different ksharas enumerated in the treatment of kapha gulma (chapter 16 of chikitsasthana) can also be parkaken. Similarly the Siladi rasayana or Brahma rasayana (described in chapter 49 of uttarasthana) or the one formulated by Agastya (agastya rasayana chapter 5 of chikitsasthana) should be taken. (59-61)
स्याच्छूलंयस्य भुक्तेऽति जीर्यत्यल्पं जरां गते । शाम्येत् सकुष्ठकृमिजिल्लवणद्वयतिल्वकैः ।।६२।।
सदेवदार्वतिविषैश्चर्णमुष्णाम्बुना पिबेत् । यस्य जीर्णेऽधिकं स्नेहैः स विरेच्यः फलैः पुनः ॥६३॥
जीर्यत्यन्ने तथा मूलैस्तीक्ष्णैः शूले सदाधिके । प्रायोऽनिलो रुद्धगतिः कुप्यत्यामाशयेयतः ॥६४॥
तस्यानुलोमनं कार्यं शुद्धिलङ्घनपाचनैः । कृमिघ्नमौषधं सर्वं कृमिजे हृदयामये ॥६५ ।।
If the patient develops severe abdominal pain commencing immediately after meals, becoming less during digestion and subsiding after digestion, he should drink hot water mixed with the powder of kusta, krmijit, the two lavana, tilvaka, devadaru and ativisa; if the pain is severe during digestion, then purgations should be induced by administration of oils (such as oil of eranda etc); if the pain is severe after the digestion, purgation should be induced by using fruits (such as haritaki etc) and if the pain is severe always, then purgations should be by the use of roots which are very powerful (such as dantimula, trivrit, etc) since anila (vata) obstructed in its movement gets aggravated in the amasaya (stomach) efforts should be made for creating its anulomana (downward movement) by prescribing treatments such as sodhana (purifications), langhana (fasting etc.) and pacana (digestives).
In heart disease due to krimi (internal parasites) all the antiparasite treatments should be done. (62-65)
तृष्णाचिकित्सितम् ।
Trishna chikitsa – treatment of Thirst
तृष्णासु वातपित्तघ्नो विधिः प्रायेण शस्यते । सर्वासु शीतो बाह्यान्तस्तथा शमनशोधनः ॥६६॥
दिव्याम्बु शीतं सक्षौद्रं तद्वद्भौगं च तद्गुणम् । निर्वापितं तप्तलोष्टकपालसिकतादिभिः ॥६७॥
सशर्करं वा क्वथितं पञ्चमूलेन वा जलम् । दर्भपूर्वेण मन्थश्च प्रशस्तो लाजसक्तुभिः ॥६८।।
वाट्यश्चामयवैः शीतः शकेरामाक्षिकान्वितः । यवागूः शालिभिस्तद्वत् कोद्रवैश्च चिरन्तनैः ।।६९।।
शीतेन शीतवीर्यैश्च द्रव्यैः सिद्धेन भोजनम् । हिमाम्बुपरिषिक्तस्य पयसा ससितामधु ॥ ७० ॥
रसैश्चानम्ललवणैर्जाङ्गलैर्घृतभर्जितैः । मुद्गादीनां तथा यूषैर्जीवनीयरसान्वितैः ।।७१।।
In all the varieties of thirst, measures which subdue vata and pitta generally are indicated; so also sita (cold comforts ) , samana (palliatives) and sodhana (purificatory ) measures both external and internal. Cool rain water mixed with honey is ideal for drinking, likewise, is the ground water into which heated stone, potsherd, sand etc, have been immersed (many times).
Or water boiled with darbhadi panchamulas, (trna panchamula) and mixed with sugar of mantha prepared from flour of laja, or vatya (flour of) uncooked yava (barley) cooled and mixed with sugar and honey, or yavagu from old sali (rice) or from old kodrava can be used similarly.
The food should be prepared from grains which are cold in potency and eaten cold, milk should be mixed with water of ice, sugar and honey, juice of meat of animals of desert like regions fried in ghee added with salt but not with sours; similarly the yusa (soup) of mudga and others should be processed with drugs of jivaniyagana. (66-71)
नस्यं क्षीरघृतं सिद्धं शीतैरिक्षोस्तथा रसः | नारीक्षीरेण वा घृष्टमुष्ट्रास्थि ससितं हितम् ॥७२॥
Ghee obtained by churning milk should be cooked with drugs of cold potency and after cooling used as nasal medication or juice of sugarcane alone or paste of camel bone made with breast milk and mixed with sugar are also good as nasal med (72)
निर्वापणाश्च गण्डूषाः सूत्रस्थानोदिता हिताः । दाहज्वरोक्ता लेपाद्या निरीहत्वं मनोरतिः ।।७३ ।। महासरिदादीनां दर्शनस्मरणादि च ।
Nirvapana (samana) gandusa (holding liquids in the mouth) described in sutrasthana (chapter 31) are beneficial.
Pastes etc. prescribed for anointing in treatment of fevers, having burning sensation, avoidance of strain, pleasantness of the mind. seeing or remembering the sight of big rivers, lakes etc (reservoirs of water) are all to be adhered to. (73)
तृष्णायां पवनोथायां सगुडं दधिशस्यते || रसाश्च बृंहणाः शीता विदार्यादिगणाम्बु च ॥७४ ॥
In thirst caused by pavana (vata), dadhi (curds) mixed with guda (jaggery), meat juices which are nourishing and water boiled with drugs of vidaryadigana (chapter 16 of sutrasthana) all taken cold are beneficial. (74)
पित्तजायां सितायुक्तः पक्कोदुम्बरजो रसः । तत्क्वाथो वा हिमस्तद्वत्सारिवादिगणाम्बुवा ॥७५ ॥
तद्विधैश्चगणः शीतकषायान् ससितामधून् । मधुरैरौषधैस्तद्वत् क्षीरिवृक्षैश्च कल्पितान् ।।७६ ।।
बीजपूरकमृद्वीकावटवेतसपल्लवान् । मूलानि कुशकाशानां यष्ट्याह्वं च जले शृतम् ॥७७॥
In that caused by pitta, juice of ripe fruit of udumbara mixed with sugar or its decoction after cooling; or water boiled with drugs of sarivadigana (chapter 16 of sutrasthana) and others possessing similar properties; or cold infusion of the above drugs added with sugar and honey; similarly that prepared from groups of drugs of sweet taste, or of trees which yeild milky sap, or decoction of bijapuraka, mrdvika sprouts of vata and vetasa, roots of kusa, kasa and yasti are beneficial. (75-77)
अपाकशर्कराच्छिन्नरुहालोद्धाञ्जनाम्बुवा | कार्पासीफलकल्कं वा सतक्षीरभोजनः ।।७८ ।।
Water mixed with uncooked sugar, chinnaruha, lodhra and anjana; or water mixed with paste of fruits of karpasi, should be used for drinking; milk mixed with sugar should be taken as diet. (78)
ज्वरोदितं वाद्राक्षादिपञ्चसाराम्बु वा पिबेत् ।।७९ ।।
He may also drink cold infusion of draksa etc, described in the treatment of fever (chapter 1) or water of panchasara (described in raktapitta treatment) (chapter 3). (79)
कफोद्भवायां वमनं निम्बप्रसववारिणा | बिल्वाढकीपञ्चकोलदर्भपञ्चकसाधितम् ॥८० ॥
जलं पिबेद्रजन्या वा सिद्धं सक्षौद्रशर्करम् । मुद्द्रयूषं च सव्योषपटोलीनिम्बपल्लवम् ।। यवान्नंतीक्ष्णकवलनस्यलेहांश्चशीलयेत् ॥८१ ॥
In that (thirst) caused by kapha, vomiting should be induced by using water containing (paste of) sprouts of nimba, water boiled with bilva, adhaki, panchakola and darbha panchaka (trna panchamula); or water boiled with rajani mixed with honey and sugar, should be used for drinking; yusa (soup) of mudga mixed with vyosa, patoli and tender leaves of nimba and yavanna (boiled barley) should be used as food; strong mouth gargles, nasal drops and confections should be used. (80-81)
सर्वैरामाच्च तद्धन्त्री क्रियेष्टा वमनं तथा । त्र्यूषणारुष्करवचाफलाम्लोष्णाम्बुमस्तुभिः ॥८२।।
अन्नात्ययान्मण्डमुष्णं हिमं मन्थं च कालवित् । तृषि श्रमान्मांसरसं मन्थं वा ससितं पिबेत् ||८३ ||
आतपात् ससितं मन्थं यवकोलजसक्तुभिः । सर्वाण्यङ्गानि लिम्पेच्च तिलपिण्याककाञ्जिकैः ॥८४ ।।
शीतस्त्रानाच्च मद्याम्बु पिबेत्तृड वान्गुडाम्बुवा | मद्यादर्धजलं मद्यं स्नातोऽम्ललवणैर्युतम् ॥८५ ।।
For thirst caused by all (the three doshas) and by ama (undigested food) appropriate treatments and emesis therapy should be adopted, tryusana, aruskara, vacha, juice of sour fruits, hot water or ma,tu ( whey) can be used to cause vomiting.
For that caused by over-eating, warm manda ( scum of gruel) or cold mantha (solution of corn flour) should be used suitable to the time (of meals and of season ).
In thirst due to exertion, meat juice or mantha mixed with sugar should be used for drinking.
For that due to exposure to sunlight, mantha prepared from flour of yava mixed with kola and sita (sugar) should be used for drinking; the entire body should be covered with a paste of oil cake of tila and kanjika (fermented rice-wash) and then given bath in cold water; if he is thirsty he should drink either wine mixed with water or jaggery water; after bath he should drink wine, mixed with half its quantity of water added with some sours and salt (82-85)
स्त्रेहतीक्ष्णतराग्निस्तु स्वभावशिशिरंजलम् । स्नेहादुष्णाम्ब्वजीर्णात्तु जीर्णान्मण्डं पिपासितः ।।८६ ।।
पिबेत् स्निग्धान्नतृषितो हिमस्पर्धिगुडोदकम् । गुर्वाद्यन्नेन तृषितः पीत्वोष्णाम्बु तदुल्लिखेत् ॥८७ ॥
क्षयजायां क्षयहितं सर्वं बृंहणमौषधम् । कृशदुर्बलरूक्षाणां क्षीरंछागो रसोऽथवा ।। क्षीरंच सोर्ध्ववातायां क्षयकासहरैः शृतम् ॥८८ ॥
रोगोपसर्गजातायां धान्याम्बु ससितामधु । पाने प्रशस्तं सर्वा च क्रिया रोगाद्यपेक्षया ॥८९ ।।
तृष्णक् पूर्वामयक्षीणो न लभेत जलं यदि | मरणं दीर्घरोगं वा प्राप्नुयात् त्वरितं ततः ।। ९० ।।
सात्म्यान्नपानभैषज्यैस्तृष्णां तस्य जयेत्पुरः । तस्यां जितायामन्योऽपि व्याधिः शक्यश्चिकित्सितुम् ॥९१ ॥
In thirst, due to increase of digestive activity, as a result of oleation therapy, the patient should drink water which is cold by nature.
In that due to indigestion, he should drink hot water and after digestion drink manda (scum of gruel).
A Patient suffering from thirst due to consuming of very fatty food, he should drink jaggery water cooled by ice; he who is thirsty by taking heavy indigestable foods, should induce vomiting by drinking hot water and expel it out.
In thirst arising from depletion of tissues, all drugs which are nitritive should be used; for those who are emaciated, debilitied and dry, goats’s milk or juice of goats meat is ideal.
In thirst due to upward movement of vata, medicated milk described in the treatment of ksayakasha (chapter 5) should be used.
In thirst, secondary to other disease, dhanyambu (fermented soup of grains, pulses etc) mixed with sugar and honey is ideal for drinking and all other treatments appropriate to the primary disease should also be done.
The patient of thirst, who is emaciated by earlier diseases, if unable get (sufficient quantity of) water, he becomes a victim of either death or of long continuing diseases; hence he should be treated quickly, with foods, drinks and medicines which are accustomed to him and also cure him quickly; once it (thirst) is cured it is possible to treat the other diseases also. (86-91)
