VIRECHANA KALPA – Preparation of Purgative recipes – Ashtanga Samgraha Kalpasthana Chapter 2

स्माहुरात्रेयादयो महर्षयः ।। १ ।।

We will now expound Virechana kalpa-preparation of purgative recipes; thus said Atreya and other great sages. ( 1 )

अथातो विरेचनकल्पं व्याख्यास्यामः । इतिह

Trivrit syama kalpa

विरेचनद्रव्याणां मूलेषु त्रिवृत् | त्वक्षु तिल्वकः । क्षीरेषु स्नुही । फलेषु हरीतकी प्रधानानि । त्रिवृतायाः खलु द्विविधं मूलमरुणं श्यावंच । तत्रारुणं कषायमधुरं विपाके कटुकं रूक्षं श्रेष्मपित्तहरं कल्पनाविशेषात्पुनः सर्वव्याधिप्रशमनम् । सुखविरेचनत्वात् शिशुस्थविरसुकुमारमृदुकोष्ठेषु प्रशस्तं त्रिवृच्छब्दवाच्यंच |॥ २ ॥

Among the purgative drugs, trivrit is the chief among the roots, tilvaka among barks, snuhi among milky saps and haritaki among fruits.

Roots of trivrit are of two kinds-aruna (light-red, light brown) and syama (blue); that which is aruna (light red, light brown) is astringent-sweet in taste, pungent at the end of digestion, is dry, subdues slesma (kapha) and pitta and cures all the diseases by the use of appropriate formulations of recipes; being a harmless and soft purgative, it is ideal for children, the aged, the tender and those of soft bowels, this variety is commonly referred to by the term ‘trivrit’. इतरदपि तस्मात् गुणैः किञ्चिदूनं तीक्ष्णं कण्ठहृदयकर्षणं मूर्छासम्मोहकृदाशु दोषहरत्वात् बहुदोषक्लेशक्षमक्रूरकोष्ठेषु प्रशस्तं श्यामाशब्दवाच्यं च ॥३॥

The other variety (syama ) is slightly inferior in qualities, is penetrating, gives trouble to the throat and heart, produces fainting, and delusion, being very quick in eliminating the doshas, it is ideal for those who have hard bowels. This is referred to by the term ‘Syama’. ( 3 )

अथ तयोर्मूलमतिर्यग्विसृतं गम्भीरानुगतं शुक्ष्णमाहरेत् । ततस्त्वचं शोषयित्वा सम्यक् सुगुप्तं स्थापयेत् ॥४॥

Next, these roots which have not speared sidewards (spread only downwards) and which are deep inside and soft should be collected, their bark (bark of the root) seperated, dried well and preserved carefully (for use later). (4)

तच्चूर्णं शुण्ठीसैन्धवयुक्तमम्लैर्मांसरसेन वा पिबेद्वातामयेषु । क्षीरक्षौद्रद्राक्षेक्षुकाश्मर्यस्वरससर्पिः स्वादुद्रव्यक्वाथैः सशर्करं पित्तोत्थेषु । मूत्रक्षौद्रद्राक्षारिष्टपीलुरसत्रिफलापञ्चकोलक्वाथैर्व्योषचूर्णानुविद्धंकफजेषु ॥ ५ ॥

The powder (of the bark) mixed with sunthi and saindhava should be consumed either with sour liquids or meat-juice in diseases caused by vata; with milk, honey, fresh juice of draksa, iksu, kasmarya,ghee or decoction of sweet drugs added with sugar in diseases arising from pitta; with urines (of cow and other animals) honey, juice of draksa, arista, pilu, decoction of triphala, or panchakola added with powder of vyosa in diseases of kapha. (5)

एभिरेव च द्रव्यैर्यथास्वं घृतशर्कराद्राक्षेक्षुरसतुगाक्षीरीमधुराणि मातुलुङ्गदाडिमामलककोलकरमर्दकपित्थरसतक्राम्लानि सैन्धवलवणानि व्योषतीक्ष्णानि विविधवेशवारपरिपूरितानि सहकाररसत्रिजातनागकेसरकर्पूरसुरभीणि लेहगुटिकामोदकभक्ष्यभोज्यान्युपकल्पयेदिति । भवति चात्र ॥ ६ ॥

From these drugs different recipes should be prepared for use; if they are desired to be of sweet taste, mixing with ghee, sugar, juice of draksa, iksu and tugaksiri and other sweet materials; if they are to be of sour taste mixing with the juices of matulunga, dadima, amalaka, kola, karamarda or kapittha, takra (buttermilk ) or other sours, saindhava and salts; if they are to be pungent, mixing with vyosa (should be made); they can also be prepared in different kinds of vesavara and other kinds of eatables; each of the recipes may be made fragrant with juice of sahakara, trijata, nagakesara and karpura; recipes may be in the form of confection, pills, bolus, snacks (in less quantity) and mess (eatable in more quantity). (6)

त्रिवृत्कल्ककषायेण साधितः ससितो हिमः । मधुत्रिजातसंयुक्तो लेहो हृद्यं विरेचनम् ॥ ७ ॥

The confection prepared from the decoction of trivrit, its paste, mixed with sugar, honey and trijata and used cold is a pleasant purgative. (7) अजगन्धा तुगाक्षीरी विदारी शर्करा त्रिवृत् । चूर्णितं मधुसर्पिर्भ्यां लीढ्वा साधु विरिच्यते ।

सन्निपातज्वरस्तम्भपिपासादाहपीडितः ॥८॥

Powder of ajagandha, tugaksiri, vidari, sarkara (sugar), and trivrit, mixed with honey and ghee and licked acts as a good purgative for persons suffering from fever arising from all the three doshas, stiffness of the body parts, thirst and burning sensation. ( 8 )

लिम्पेदन्तस्त्रिवृतया द्विधाकृत्वेक्षुगण्डिकाम् । एकीकृत्य च तत्स्विन्नं पुटपाकेन भक्षयेत् ।।९ ।।

A piece of sugarcane is split vertically and smeared inside with the powder of trivrit, the halves of the cane joined together (given a coating of mud) and cooked in the putapaka method. After it cools slightly, the cane should be chewed. (9)

त्वगेलाभ्यां समानीली तैस्त्रिवृत्तैश्चशर्करा | चूर्णफलरसक्षौद्रसक्तुभिस्तर्पणंपिबेत् ॥ १० ॥

वातपित्तकफोत्थेषु रोगेष्वल्पानलेषु च । नरेषु सुकुमारेषु निरपायं विरेचनम् ।।११ ।।

Equal parts of tvak and ela (together forming one part), nili equal to them (one part) and trivrit equal to all of them (two parts) and sugar equal to all of them (four parts) are converted into powder and consumed along with fruit juices, honey and thin paste of flour. This is a harmless purgative recipe in disease of vata, pitta and kapha, weakness of digestion and of persons of tender constitution. (10-11)

विडङ्गतण्डुलवरायावशूककणास्त्रिवृत् । सर्वतोऽर्धेन तल्लीढं मध्वाज्येनगुडेनवा ॥ १२ ॥

गुल्मंप्लीहोदरंकासं हलीमकमरोचकम् । कफवातकृतांश्चान्यान् परिमार्ष्टिगदान् बहून् ||१३||

Powder of equal quantity of vidangatandula, vara, yavasuka and kana (together making one part) mixed with half that quantity of trivrit, consumed with honey, ghee or jaggery, cures abdominal tumors, splenomegaly and many other diseases produced by kapha and vata. (12-13)

Kalyanaka guda

विडङ्गपिप्पलीमूलत्रिफलाधान्यचित्रकान् । मरिचेन्द्रयवाजाजीपिप्पलीहस्तिपिप्पलीः ॥ १४ ॥

दीप्यकं पञ्चलवणं चूर्णितं कार्षिकं पृथक् । तिलतैलत्रिवृच्चूर्णभागौ चाष्टपलोन्मितौ ।। १५ ।।

धात्रीफलरसप्रस्थांस्त्रीन्गुडार्धतुलान्वितान् । पक्त्वामृद्वग्निना खादेत्ततो मात्रामयन्त्रणः ।।१६।।

कुष्ठार्श: कामलागुल्ममेहोदरभगन्दरान् । ग्रहणीपाण्डुरोगांश्चहन्तिपुंसवनश्चसः ।।१७।। गुड: कल्याणको नाम सर्वर्तुषु च यौगिकः ।

Powder of one karsa each of vidanga, pippalimila, triphala, dhanya, chitraka, maricha, indrayava, ajaji, pippali, hastipippali dipyaka and panchalavana, eight pala of tila taila, and powder of trivrit (together), three prastha of juice of dhatriphala and half tula of guda (jaggery) are all cooked over mild fire (to form a confection). Consumed in the usual dose and without much restrictions, it cures psoriasis, haemorrhoid jaundice, abdominal tumor, diabetes, enlargement of the abdomen, fistula of the rectum, duodenal disease anaemia, acts as a bestower of male offspring, this recipe known as Kalyanaka guda is suitable for all seasons. (14-17½ )

व्योषत्रिजातकाम्भोदकृमिघ्नामलकैस्त्रिवृत् ॥ १८ ॥

सर्वैः समा समसिता क्षौद्रेण गुटिकाः कृताः मूत्रकृच्छ्रज्वरच्छर्दिकासशोषभ्रमक्षये ।। तापेपाण्ड्वामयेऽल्पेग्नौशस्ताः सर्वविषेषु च ।।१९।।

Equal quantites of vyosa, trijataka, amboda, krimighna, amalaka, and trivrit (forming one part) mixed with sugar equal to all of them (are all powdered) and made into pills with honey; this recipe is ideal for dysurea, fever, vomiting, cough, consumption, giddiness, wasting burning sensation, anaemia, weakness of digestion and all types of poison. (17½-19)

त्रिवृता कौटजं बीजं पिप्पली विश्वभेषजम् । क्षौद्रद्राक्षारसोपेतं वर्षाकाले विरेचनम् ॥ २० ॥

TrivIt, kutaja bija, pippali and visvabhesaja (all equal parts) mixed with honey, and juice of draksa is an ideal purgative for rainy season. ( 20 )

त्रिवृद्दुरालभामुस्ताशर्करोदीच्यचन्दनम् । द्राक्षाम्बुना सयष्ट्याह्वसातलं जलदात्यये ॥ २१ ॥

Trivrit, duralabha, musta, sarkara, udicya, chandana, yasti, and satala(all equal parts) consumed with juice of draksa is ideal for cloudy season. (21)

त्रिवृतां चित्रकं पाठामजाजीं सरलं वचाम् । स्वर्णक्षीरीं च हेमन्ते चूर्णमुष्णाम्बुना पिबेत् ॥ २२ ॥

Powder of (equal quantity) of trivrit, chitraka, patha, ajaji, sarala, vacha and svarnaksiiri should be consumed along with hot water during winter season. ( 22 )

त्रिवृताशर्करातुल्या ग्रीष्मकाले विरेचनम् ॥ २३ ॥

त्रिवृत्त्रायन्तिहपुषासातलाकटुरोहिणीः | स्वर्णक्षीरींच संचूर्ण्य गोमूत्रे भावयेत्त्र्यहम् ।। एष सर्वर्तुको योगः स्निग्धानां मलदोषहत् ||२४||

Trivrit mixed with equal quantity of sarkara (sugar) is a purgative recipe for summer season. (Equal quantities of ) trivrit, trayanti, hapusa, satala, katurohini, and svarnaksiri-all are powdered and macerated in cows urine for three days. This recipe is suitable for all seasons, eliminates the mala (doshas and faeces) in persons who have been given oleation therapy earlier. (23-24 )

श्यामात्रिवृद्दुरालम्भाहस्तिपिप्पलिवत्सकम् । नीलिनीकटुकामुस्ता श्रेष्ठायुक्तं सुचूर्णितम् ।।

रसाज्योष्णाम्बुभिः शस्तं रूक्षाणामपिसर्वदा ॥ २५ ॥

Syama trivrit, duralabha, hastipippali, vatsaka, nilini, katuka, musta, and srestta (triphala) are nicely powdered and consumed with either meat-juice, ghee or warm water is best even for those who are dry (not having undergone oleation therapy) and in all seasons. (25)

त्र्यूषणं त्रिफला हिङ्गु कार्षिकं त्रिवृतापलम् । सौवर्चलार्धकर्षं च पलार्धं चाम्लवेतसात् ।।२६।।

तच्चूर्णंशर्करातुल्यंमण्डेनाम्लेन वापिबेत् । गुल्मपार्श्वार्तिनुत्सिद्धंजीर्णेचास्मिन्रसौदनम् ॥२७॥

One karsa each of tryusana, triphala and hingu, one pala of trivrit half karsa of sauvarchala, half-pala of amlavetasa-all are powdered and mixed with equal quantity of sugar. Consumed as such or with scum (thin fluid of gruel) or sour liquids, it cures successfully, abdominal tumors and pain in the flanks; after its digestion the person should eat boiled rice along with meat juice. (26-27)

त्रिवृतात्रिफलादन्तीसातलाव्योषसैन्धवैः । प्रकल्प्य चूर्णं सप्ताहं भाव्यमामलकाद्रसे । तद्योज्यं तर्पणेयूषेपिशिते रागयुक्तिषु ॥ २८ ॥

Powder of trivrit, triphala, danti, sarala, vyosa and saindhava should be soaked and macerated for seven days in the juice of amalaka; it should then be used along with this paste of corn flour, meat-soups, and ragayukti (sweet syrups). (28)

तुल्याम्लं त्रिवृताकल्कसिद्धं गुल्महरं घृतम् । श्यामात्रिवृत्कषायेण सिद्धं सर्पिः पयोऽपि वा ||२९ ||

Medicated ghee prepared with decoction and paste of trivrit, equal quantity of sour liquids and ghee, cures abdominal tumor; similarly the medicated ghee or milk prepared with the decoction of Syama and trivrit. ( 29 )

त्रिवृन्मुष्टींस्तु सनखानष्टौ द्रोणेऽम्भसः पचेत् । पादशेषं कषायं तं पूतं गुडतुलायुतम् ॥३०॥

स्त्रिग्धे स्थाप्यं घटे क्षौद्रपिप्पलीफलचित्रकैः । लिप्ते मासे गते पीतं पाण्डुश्वयथुगुल्मजित् ॥ ३१ ॥

सुरा वा त्रिवृतापादकिण्वा तत्क्वाथसंयुता ।

Eight musti (fist full) of trivrit is cooked in one drona of water, decoction reduced to quarter and filtered, it is added with one tula of guda (jaggery) poured into a pot smeared inside with ghee and a paste of honey, pippali, phala and chitraka and kept sealed for one month; consumed afterwards it cures anaemia, oedema and abdominal tumors. (30-31) Or sura (beer) prepared with decoction of trivrit mixed with one-third of its quantity of kinva (yeast) also acts similarly. (312)

Sauviraka

यवैः श्यामात्रिवृत्क्वाथस्विन्नैः कुल्माषमम्भसा ।। आसुतंषडहंपल्लेजातं सौवीरकं पिबेत् ||३२||

Yava (barley-dehusked) steam cooked in the decoction of syama and trivrit together with half boiled masa are soaked in water and the pot kept undisturbed for six days concealed in a heap of corn and allowed to ferment. This preparation the sauviraka, should be consumed (as a purgative recipe). (32)

Tusodaka

भृष्टान्वासतुषान्शुष्कान्यवांस्तच्चूर्णसंयुतान् । आसुतानम्भसातद्वत्पिबेज्जातंतुषोदकम् ||३३ ||

Yava along with its husk is fried, mixed with the dry flour of yava-both together are soaked in water and allowed to ferment as described earlier. This preparation the tusodaka-should be consumed (as a purgative recipe). (33)

Rajavriksha kalpa

ज्वरहृद्रोगवातासृगुदावर्तादिरोगिषु । राजवृक्षोऽधिकंपथ्योमृदुर्मधुरशीतलः ||३४||

बाले वृद्धे क्षते क्षीणे सुकुमारेच मानवे | योज्यो मृद्वनपायित्वाद्विशेषाच्चतुरङ्गुलः ॥ ३५ ॥

For diseases like fever, heart disease, gout, upward movement of vata etc, rajavriksha is more suitable; because of its soft, sweet (taste) and cold (potency) properties.

Caturangula (rajavriksha) should be administered especially to children, the aged; who are wounded, who are wasted, for persons of tender constitution because it is soft (mild) and harmless. ( 34-35)

फलकाले परिणतं फलं तस्य समाहरेत् । तेषां गुणवतां भारंसिकतासु विनिक्षिपेत् ॥ ३६ ।।

]सप्तरात्रात्समुद्धृत्य शोषयेदातपेततः । ततोमज्जानमुद्धृत्य शुचौपात्रे निधापयेत् ।।३७ ॥

द्राक्षारसेन तं दद्याद्दाहोदावर्तपीडिते । चतुर्वर्षे सुखं बाले यावद्द्वादशवार्षिके ॥ ३८ ॥

Fully ripe fruits of it (caturangula) are collected during the fruiting season and good ones selected, one bhara (by weight) of such good quality fruits are kept buried in a heap of sand, removed after sevendays, and dried in sun. Afterwards the marrow inside them is collected and preserved in a clean vessel (container).

It should be administered along with juice of draksa for persons suffering from burning sensation, upward movement of vata, and for children between four and twelve years of age. (36-38)

चतुरङ्गुलमज्ञो वा कषायंपाययेद्धिमम् । दधिमण्डसुरामण्डधात्रीफलरसैःपृथक् ।।

सौवीरकेण वा युक्तं कल्केन त्रैवृतेन वा ।। ३९ ।।

चतुरङ्गुलसिद्धाद्वा क्षीराद्यदुदियात् घृतम् । मज्जकल्केन धात्रीणां रसे तत्साधितं पिबेत् ॥ ४० ॥

Or the decoction of caturangula and butter obtained from it by churning and ghee prepared from it.

This ghee is cooked again with paste of marrow of caturangula and juice of dhatri and medicated ghee prepared. This recipe should be consumed. (39-40)

तदेव दशमूलस्य कुलत्थानां यवस्य च । कषाये साधितंसर्पिः कल्कैःश्यामादिभिः पिबेत् ।।४१ ॥

The same (ghee obtained from milk boiled with marrow of caturangula) is converted into medicated ghee by using decoction of dashamoola, kulattha and yava and paste of syama etc. (other purgative drugs). This recipe can be made use of. (41)

दन्तीकषाये तन्मज्झो गुंडं जीर्णं च निक्षिपेत् । तमरिष्टं स्थितं मासं पाययेत् पक्षमेव वा | ॥४२ ।।

Its marrow (caturangula) and old ghee are put into the decoction of danti (filled into a jar, sealed and kept hidden inside a heap of corn) and arista (fermented decoction ) obtained after a lapse of a month or a fortnight; this can be made use of. (42)

Tilvaka Kalpa

त्वचं तिल्वकमूलस्य त्यक्ताभ्यन्तरवल्कलम् । विशोष्य चूर्णयित्वा चद्वौ भागौ गालयेत्ततः ||४३ ॥

लोध्रस्यैव कषायेण तृतीयं तेन भावयेत् । कषाये दशमूलस्य तं भागं भावितं पुनः ॥४४॥

शुष्कचूर्णंपुनः कृत्वा ततः पाणितलं पिबेत् । मस्तुमूत्रसुरामण्डकोलधात्रीफलाम्बुभिः ॥ ४५ ॥

The bark of the roots of tilvaka is seperated and the internal layer of fibres (removed and) discarded. The bark is then dried well and powdered; two parts of this powder is mixed with twice its quantity of decoction of lodhra itself and solution decanted. In this, the remaining one-third part (of powder) is soaked and macerated, in the decoction of dashamoola; next, all the powders are mixed, dried and preserved. It should be consumed in the dose of one panitala along with either mastu (whey), (cows) urine, suramanda (scum of beer), juice of fruits of kola or dhatri. (43-45 )

मेषशृङ्ग्यभयाकृष्णाचित्रकैः क्वथिते जले | मरुजाः सुनुयात्तच्च जातं सौवीरकं यदा ।।

भवेदञ्जलिनातस्य लोध्रकल्कं पिबेत्तदा ।।४६ ।।

सुरां लोधकषायेण जातां पक्षस्थितां पिबेत् ।

Maruja (yava) is soaked in the decoctionof mesasringi, abhaya, krsna and chitraka and the liquid allowed to ferment to form a sauviraka; this should be mixed with a paste of lodhra root-bark, one anjali (four pala) in quantity and consumed.

Or sura (beer) prepared from the decoction of lodhra is in the course of a fortnight should be consumed. (46)

तिल्वकस्य कषायेण कल्केन च सशर्करः ॥ सघृतः साधितो लेहः स च श्रेष्ठं विरेचनम् ॥४७॥

Leha (confection) prepared from the decoction and paste of tilvaka sugar and ghee, forms a best purgative recipe. (47)

Sudha kalpa

सुधाभिनत्तिदोषाणां महान्तमपि सञ्चयम् । आश्वेव कष्टविभ्रंशा नैव तां कल्पयेदतः ॥४८॥

मृदुकोष्ठेऽबले बाले स्थविरे दीर्घरोगिण | कल्प्या गुल्मोदरगरत्वग्रोगमधुमेहिषु ।। पाण्डौ दूषीविषेशोफेदोषविभ्रान्तचेतसि ।।४९ ।।

Sudha breaks up even profound accumulation of doshas of very quickly and also creates many difficulties; hence it should not be administered to persons of soft bowles, who are weak, for children, and old persons and for those suffering from long disease.

It may be made use of in abdominal tumors. enlargement of the abdomen, homocidal poisoning. skin diseases, diabetes mellitus, anaemia, dusivisa (weak poison), oedema, and diseases of the mind caused by the doshas. (48-49)

सा श्रेष्ठा कण्टकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्बहुभिश्च समाचिता | द्विवर्षां वा त्रिवर्षां वा शिशिरान्ते विशेषतः ॥ ५० ॥

तां पाटयित्वा शस्त्रेण क्षीरमुद्धारयेत्ततः । बिल्वादीनां बृहत्योर्वा क्वाथेन सममेकशः ॥५१ ॥

मिश्रयित्वा सुधाक्षीरं ततोऽङ्गारेषु शोषयेत् । पिबेत् कृत्वा तु गुटिकां मस्तुमूत्रसुरादिभिः ॥५२॥

That variety (of sudha) is best which has plenty of sharp thorns, and two or three years of age. They should be cut with a sharp instrument and the milky sap collected at the end of sisira (autumn). This milky sap of sudha is then mixed with equal quantities of either the decoction of bilvadi (panchamula) or of the two brihati, evoporated over burning embers, and then rolled into pills. This should be consumed along with mastu (whey), cows urine, sura (beer) etc. (50-52)

त्रिवृतादीन्नव वरां स्वर्णक्षीरीं ससातलाम् । सप्ताहं स्नुकूपयःपीतानसेनाज्येन वा पिबेत् ।।

तद्व्योषोत्तमाकुम्भनिकुम्भाग्नीन्गुडाम्बुना ।।५३ ।।

The nine (drugs) starting with trivrit, (trivrit, syama, rajavriksha, aragvadha, tilvaka, sudha, sankhini dravanti and danti) vara (triphala) svarnaksiri and satala, each one soaked in the milky sap of snuk for seven days should be consumed either with meat-juice or ghee; likewise, vyosa, uttama (triphala), kumbha, nikumbha, and agni (soaked for seven days in the milky sap of snuhi) should be used along with solution of guda (jaggery). (53)

अद्यात्च्छ्यामात्रिवृत्क्वाथंस्नुक्क्षीरघृतफाणितैः । कासारिरसयूषाद्यैर्युक्तंवास्नुक्पयः पिबेत् ॥५४॥

The decoction of syama and trivrit should be consumed with milky sap of snuhi, ghee and phanita (half-cooked molasses) or milky sap of snuhi may be consumed either with the juice or yusa (soup) of kasari etc. (54)

निकुम्भकुम्भशम्याकशङ्खिनीसप्तलारजः । रात्रौ मूत्रे दिवाघर्मे सप्ताहं स्थापयेदिति । ॥५५ ।।

स्नुक्क्षीरेऽपि ततस्तेन माल्यं वासोऽवचूर्णितम् । आजिघ्नन्प्रावृणानश्चमृदुकोष्ठो विरिच्यते ।।५६ ।।

Powder of nikumbha, kumbha, samyaka, sankhini and saptala should be soaked in cows urine at night and kept in the sun during day, the process being continued for seven days. Similarly in the milky sap of snuhi ( soaked and dried for seven days); then this powder should be sprinkled over a garland or spread on a cloth; by inhaling the smell of either the flowers or the cloth, the person of soft bowels gets purgations. Sankhini kalpa

नातिशुष्कं फलं ग्राह्यं शङ्खिन्या निस्तुषीकृतम् । सप्तलायास्तथा मूलं ते तु तीक्ष्णविकाषिणी ।

श्रेष्मामयोदरगरश्वयथ्वादिषुकल्पयेत् ॥५७ ॥

Fruits of sankhini which are not very dry should be collected and their external covering removed (discarded), so also the roots of saptala; both these possess powerfully penetrating and quick spreading actions, hence, they should be made use of in diseases caused by kapha, enlargement of the abdomen, oedema etc. (57)

अक्षमात्रं तयोः पिण्डं मदिरालवणान्वितम् । हृद्रोगे वातकफजे तद्वद्गुल्मेऽपियोजयेत् ॥५८ ।।

Their paste one aksa in quantity should be used along with madira (fermented liquor) and lavana (salt) in diseases of the heart and abdominal tumor both produced by vatakapha. (58)

शङ्खिनीचूर्णभागौ द्वौ तिलकल्कस्य चापरः । हरीतकीकषायेण तत्तैलं पीडितं पिबेत् ।।

अतसीसर्षपैरण्डकरञ्जेष्वप्ययंविधिः ॥५९ ॥

Two parts of powder of sankhini and equal quantity of paste of tila both are put into a mill and oil extracted. This oil consumed along with the decoction of haritaki (induce purgations ). Similarly the oil extracted from atasi sarsapa, eranda, karanja in the same manner (may also be used). (59)

Danti-dravanti kalpa

दन्तिदन्तस्थिरस्थूलं मूलंदन्तीद्रवन्तिजम् । आताम्रश्यावतीक्ष्णोष्णमाशुकारिविकाषिच ॥६० ॥

गुरुप्रकोपिवातस्य पित्तश्लेष्मविलायनम् । तत्क्षौद्रपिप्पलीलिप्तं स्वेदयेन्मृत्कुशान्तरे ।

शोषयेच्चातपेऽग्न्यकर्कौ हतो ह्यस्य विकाषिताम् ।।६१ ।।

The roots of danti and dravanti, thick and hard, like the tusk of an elephant, coppery and blue in colour, possess penetrating, hot (heat producing), quick acting, vikasi (causing looseness of the joints), hevy (hard to digest), aggravating vata, liquifying and pitta and slesma (kapha) properties, these (roots) should be given a coating a paste of honey and pippali, covered with kusa grass and a layer of mud plaster. Next they are dried in the sun and then placed inside fire, (when red hot, they are removed out); by this, they get rid of their vikasi (causing looseness of the joints) property (and becomes fit for use). (60-61)

तत् पिबेन्मस्तुमदिरातक्रपीलुरसासवैः ।अभिष्यण्णतनुर्गुल्मी प्रमेही जठरी गरी ॥ गोमृगाजरसैः पाण्डुः कृमिकोष्ठी भगन्दरी ||६२ ॥

These roots should be used along with mastu ( whey ) madira (liquor) takra (buttermilk) juice of pilu, or asava (fermented infusion) by patient of abdominal tumor, diabetes, enlargement of the abdomen and homicidal poison, after undergoing internal oleation therapy, along with juice of meat of cow, sheep or goat by patients of anaemia, intestinal worms and fistula-in-ano. (62)

सिद्धं तत्क्वाथकल्काभ्यांदशमूलरसेनच । विसर्पविद्रध्यलजीकक्ष्यादाहान्जयेत्घृत्तम् ।।६३ ।।

तैलं तुगुल्ममेहार्शोविबन्धकफमारुतान् । महास्त्रेहः शकृच्छुक्रवातसङ्गानिलव्यथाः ॥ ६४॥

Medicated ghee prepared with their decoction and paste of these roots consumed along with decoction of dashamoola, cures herpes, abscess, alaji (skin diseases), kaksya ( swelling in the axilla) and burning sensation; medicated oil (prepared from them) cures abdominal tumors, diabetes, haemorrhoids, constipation and diseases of kapha and vata; mahasneha (mixture of all the four fats) cooked with these roots cures obstruction of faeces, semen, vata (flatus) and diseases of anila (vata). (63-64)

दन्त्यारसेऽजशृङ्ग्याश्चगुडक्षौद्रघृतान्वितः । लेहः सिद्धो विरेकार्थे दाहसन्तापमेहनुत् ।।

वाततर्षे ज्वरे पैत्तेस्यात्स एवाजगन्धया | ॥६५॥

The confection prepared with juice (decoction) of danti and ajasrngi along with guda (jaggery), honey and ghee, used as a purgative, cures burning sensation, distress of heat and diabetes, the same confection and used along with ajagandha is useful in distress caused by vata and fever caused by pitta. (65)

दन्तीद्रवन्त्योर्मूलानिपचेद्धात्रीरसे तत: । त्रीनंशान् फाणितात् द्वौ च भृष्टस्तैले घृतेऽथवा || ६६ ||

श्यामादिकल्कयुक्तोऽयं लेहः सिद्धंविरेचनम् । पथ्याक्षदशमूलानां तद्बल्लेहाः पृथग्रसैः ॥६७॥

Roots of danti and dravanti, cooked along with the juice of dhatri, one-third of the quantity of phanita (half-cooked molassess). twice their quantity of oil or ghee, and paste of drugs of syamadigana (chapter 16 of sutrasthana) are cooked and a confection prepared. This is an effective purgative recipe; confections prepared seperately with decoctions of pathya, aksa, and dashamoola also act similarly. (66-67)

तयोर्बिडसमं चूर्णं तद्रसेनैव भावितम् । विबद्धविशि वातोत्थे गुल्मे चाम्लयुतं हितम् ।। मुद्द्रादिसिद्धैस्तन्मूलैर्यूषादींश्चप्रकल्पयेत् ||६८ ।।

Their roots (of danti and dravanti) powdered, mixed with equal quantity of bida (lavana) soaked and macerated with their own juice (decoction) and consumed along with sour liquids, is useful in constipation and abdominal tumor arising from vata. These roots can also be consumed with soups of mudga and other (corns, pulses) (68)

दन्तीद्रवन्तीमरिचस्वर्णक्षीरीयवासकम् । सशुण्ठ्यग्निकपृथ्वीक चूर्णितं सप्त वासरान् ॥६९ ॥

मूत्रभावितमाज्येन पिबेज्जीर्णे च तर्पणम् । सर्वदा सर्वरोगेषु बाले वृद्धे च तद्धितम् ॥ ७० ॥

दुर्भुक्ताजीर्णपार्श्वार्तिगुल्मप्लीहोदरेषु च । गण्डमालासु वाते च पाण्डुरोगे च शस्यते ॥७१ ।।

Danti, dravanti, maricha, svarnaksiri, yavasaka, sunthi, agnika and prithvika-are powdered, soaked and macerated in cows urine for seven days. Consumed along with ghee and tarpana (thick liquid prepared from flour) partaken after its digestion, it is useful, at all times, in all diseases, for both young and old. It is beneficial in indigestion caused by bad intake of foods, pain in the flanks, abdominal tumor, splenomegaly, scrofula and anaemia caused by vata. (69-7!)

गुडस्याष्टपले पथ्याविंशतिः स्यात् पलं पलम् । दन्तीचित्रकयोः कर्षौं पिप्पलीत्रिवृतोर्दश |॥ ७२ ॥

प्रकल्प्य मोदकानेकं दशमेदशमेऽहनि | उष्णाम्भोऽनुपिबन्खादेत्तान्सर्वान्विधिनामुना ||७३ ||

एते निष्परिहाराः स्युः सर्वव्याधिनिबर्हणाः । विशेषाद्ग्रहणीपाण्डुकण्डूकोठार्शसांहिताः ।। विरेचनेमुख्यतमा नवैतेत्रिवृतादयः ॥७४ ॥

Eight pala of guda (jaggery), twenty (pala) pathya, one pala each of danti and chitraka, ten karsa of pippali and trivrit (each five karsa) all are powdered and made into many bolus (big sized pills); one pill is consumed along with warm water, on every tenth day, till all the pills are exhausted. This recipe is indispensable for the cure of all diseases and especially suitable for diseases of the duodenum, anaemia, itching, rashes and harmorrhoids. The nine drugs ( mentioned (so far) comm mencing with trivrit are the most important for purgation therapy. (72-74)

Haritaki kalpa

हरीतकीमपित्रिवृद्विधानेनोपकल्पयेत् । विशेषात् ग्रहणीशोफपाण्डुमेहोदरापहाम् ।।७५ ।।

पिबेत् पथ्यां ससिन्धूत्थविडङ्गोषणनागराम् । मूत्रेण वत्सकादेर्वा निर्यूहेण हरीतकीम् ॥७६ ॥

पथ्यानागरचूर्णं वा संयुतं नीलिनीफलैः । गुडेन भक्षयेत्तोयं कवोष्णं च पिबेदनु ।॥७७ ॥

Haritaki can also be used in the same manner as of trivrit, especially for the cure of duodena (disease, oedema, anaemia, diabetes, and enlargement of the abdomen; pathya, sindhuta (saindhava), vidanga, usana and nagara, should be consumed along with cows urine or decoction of drugs of vatsakadi gana (chapter 16 of sutrasthana); powder of pathya, nagara and fruits nilini mixed with guda (jaggery) should be eaten followed by luke warm water. (75-76)

पथ्यात्रिवृद्भ्यां गुटिकाः कार्याद्राक्षारसाप्लुताः । माषप्रमाणास्ताः शुष्कालिह्याद्यक्ष्मी घृतद्रुताः ॥

पथ्यात्रिवृत्पटूष्णाम्बु सर्वत्रेष्टंविरेचनम् ।।७८ ।।

Pills of the size of masa (black gram) are prepared from pathya, and trivrit along with the juice of draksa, and dried; these should be licked with ghee by the patient of pulmonary tuberculosis. (powder of) pathya, trivrit and patu, consumed along with warm water is an ideal purgative for all the occassions (seasons, time of the day, stage of diseases etc). (78)

स्नुक्क्षीरभाविते पथ्याचूर्णे कुर्वीत मोदकान् । कोलास्थिमात्रान् शुष्कांश्च नवनीतेन लेहयेत् ॥

गुल्मोदरयकृत्प्लीहशूलानाहविबन्धिनः ।।७९ ।।

Pills of the size of seeds of kola prepared from the powder of pathya soaked and macerated in milky sap of snuhi, and dried; this should be licked with butter by patients of abdominal tumor, enlargement of the abdomen, diseases of the liver and spleen, pain in the abdomen, distention of the abdomen and constipation. (79)

लिह्यादेरण्डतैलेन कुष्ठंत्रिकटुकान्वितम् । सुखोदकं चानुपिबेत्सुखमेतद्विरेचनम् ।।८० ॥

(Powder of) kustha mixed with trikatuka licked along with eranda taila, followed by warm water as after-drink, forms a trouble free purgative recipe. (80)

अल्पस्यापि महार्थत्वंप्रभूतस्याल्पकर्मताम् । कुर्यात्संश्लेषविशेषकालसंस्कारयुक्तिभिः ॥८१ ॥

Drugs though small in quantity (sometimes) produce great effects, some other times they produce very little effect though large in quantity due to combination (with other drugs), removal (of their powerful properties time (season, time of administration, stage of disease, age and condition of the patient etc ), processing ( soaking, maceration, cooking etc) and planning (mode of administration, regimen of diet etc). (81)

त्वक्केसराम्रातकदाडिमैलासितोपलामाक्षिकमातुलुङ्गैः ।

मद्येन तैस्तैश्च मनोऽनुकूलैर्युक्तानि देयानि विरेचनानि ॥८२ ॥

Purgative recipes, should be administered mixed with drugs pleasant to the mind such as tvak, kesara, amrataka, dadima, ela, sitopala ( sugar candy) maksika (honey), matulunga or madya (wines), which ever is liked by the person. (82)
