Nasya Vidhi chapter explains the various methods, types of use, indications, and contraindications for nasal instillation of medicines. The chapter explains in detail the types, methods, indications, and contraindications of Nasya therapy. It is the 20th chapter in Ashtanga Hrudaya Sutrasthana, written by Acharya Vagbhata, the son of Vaidyapathi Simhagupta.

Nasya karma

Nasya – Nasal medicine is specifically used to treat conditions from the upper parts of the shoulders.

Shodhana Nasya uses fats (oils and Ghee) suitable for illnesses and processed with the appropriate medications in the form of Paste, decoction, etc., and combined with salt, honey, (fermented to make an infusion). 5

Brimhana Nasya

A nourishing kind of Nasya treatment is recommended to treat Vataja Shoola headaches of Vata source, Suryavarta – a headache that worsens by the day. Svarakshaya – loss of voice, Nasa, Asya Shosha – impure – dryness of the mouth and nose Vak Sangha – Tough to speak.
Krichra Bodha – difficulties in opening eyes and

Brimhana nasya karma

Brimhana Nasya is the consumption of juice from the blood or meat of animals in desert-like areas, and the Khapura plant extracts Gums, resin, etc.

Avapeeda is derived from powder (Kalka), fresh juice, and decoction and is a powerful purgation for the head.

Dhmana Nasya

Dhmana is in the form of powder- to be blown into the nose and is virechaniya nasya.

The method is to blow it in by blowing breath from the mouth. The force is stored in a tube of 6 Angula in length. It has an opening on both sides. It draws out the severely imbalanced Doshas due to their being in the form of a powder. 8

people who have received bloodletting therapy or had extreme bleeding caused by other reasons,
with acute Rhinitis
People who are experiencing natural body urges;
the woman who recently gave birth,
Patients with dyspnoea, COPD, Asthma, and cough,
individuals who have had purification (Panchakarma) treatments (Vamana Virechana and Virechana)
Who have received Basti treatment, and then,
in the unsuitable season and
on days with cloudy skies, except when an emergency is due to illnesses. 11-12 1/2

Nasal medications are recommended to be administered within

morning for Shleshma – an increase in Kapha,
in the middle of the day for Pitta.
Either at night or in the evening to stay healthy.

In the months of Sharath (Autumn) and b (Spring), it is recommended to give it in the afternoon. In winter, it should be offered in the middle of the day. Evenings in Grisma -summer,
the time of day when there is the sun in Varsha the rainy season.

It is recommended to do it daily, in the evening and the morning, for the following ailments. Vataja Shiroroga – Headaches the skull caused by Vata,
Hikka – Hiccup,
Ayama – tetanus,
Apatanaka – Convulsive disorders,
Manyasthambha – neck stiffness and
Svarakshaya Hoarseness of voice 13-15

For other illnesses, the procedure should be performed on alternate days for one week.

Sukhaatma – people who live an enlightened, conservative lifestyle;

Contra indication for Pratimarsha nasya

Dushta Peenasa – infective Rhinitis,
Madyapeeta, those who had a glass of wine,
Abalashrota – Individuals with weak ears and hearing loss.

Utklishta Dosha – wherein the people in the Doshas are unbalanced and move from one location to the next;

Nasya Kriya Nisiddha Vaya – Contraindications not suitable age for Nasya

Pratimarsha is a type of nasal medicine effective from birth to death as Basti treatment. It offers the same benefits as Marsha Nasya (oil and dosage high if taken daily). It does not require any control over activities and food, nor does it carry any risk like Marsha Nasya. 32

The oil that is medicated only is suitable to use daily for Nasya (Pratimarsha) because The head of the animal is the main dwelling area of kapha, and only oil other than oil can keep it healthy. 33
