Nasya Vidhi – नस्य विधि अध्याय – Nasal Medication : Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthan Chapter 20

Nasya Vidhi chapter explains the various methods, types of use, indications, and contraindications for nasal instillation of medicines. The chapter explains in detail the types, methods, indications, and contraindications of Nasya therapy. It is the 20th chapter in Ashtanga Hrudaya Sutrasthana, written by Acharya Vagbhata, the son of Vaidyapathi Simhagupta.

Nasya – Nasal medicine is specifically used to treat conditions from the upper parts of the shoulders.

Nasal medications shouldn’t be given to people who
Just after drinking wine, water, synthetic poison (Garavisha – chronic poisoning), and fat (as part of Snehana therapy) or those who want to consume them soon,
those who have eaten just the same,
who have taken a bath or want to take a bath soon,
people who have received bloodletting therapy or had extreme bleeding caused by other reasons,
with acute Rhinitis
People who are experiencing natural body urges;
the woman who recently gave birth,
Patients with dyspnoea, COPD, Asthma, and cough,
individuals who have had purification (Panchakarma) treatments (Vamana Virechana and Virechana)
Who have received Basti treatment, and then,
in the unsuitable season and
on days with cloudy skies, except when an emergency is due to illnesses. 11-12 1/2

Nasal medications are recommended to be administered within

morning for Shleshma – an increase in Kapha,
in the middle of the day for Pitta.
Either at night or in the evening to stay healthy.


In the months of Sharath (Autumn) and b (Spring), it is recommended to give it in the afternoon. In winter, it should be offered in the middle of the day. Evenings in Grisma -summer,
the time of day when there is the sun in Varsha the rainy season.


It is recommended to do it daily, in the evening and the morning, for the following ailments. Vataja Shiroroga – Headaches the skull caused by Vata,
Hikka – Hiccup,
Ayama – tetanus,
Apatanaka – Convulsive disorders,
Manyasthambha – neck stiffness and
