Sita putana Pratisedha – Sushrutasamhita Uttaratantra Tantra Chapter 34

चतुस्त्रिंशोऽध्यायः अथातः शीतपूतनाप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः, यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ॥ १ ॥

Now we shall discourse on the medical treatment of (an attack by) sita-putana (sita-putana-Pratisedha). 1

कपित्थं सुबहां बिम्बीं तथा बिल्वं प्रचीबलम् । नन्दींभल्लातकञ्चापि परिषके बस्तमूत्रं गवां मूत्रं मुस्तञ्च सुरदारु च।

कुष्ठञ्च सर्वगन्धांश्च रोहिणीसर्जखदिर पलाशककुभत्वचः । निष्काथ्य तस्मिन् निष्काथे सक्षीरं विपचेद् धृतम् ॥ ४ ॥

प्रयोजयेत् ॥ २ ॥ तैलार्थमवचारयेत् ॥ ३॥

The decoction of Kapittha, Suvaha (Rasna), Bimbi, Bilva, Pracibala (?), Nandi (Vata) and Bhallataka should be used in sprinkling (the child’s body). The urine of a cow and of a she-goat, as well as Musta, Deva-daru Kustha and the drugs of the Sarva-gandha (Eladi) group should be used in duly preparing a medicated oil (for the purpose) and medicated Ghrita should be duly cooked with (three parts of) the decoction of Rohini, Sarjarasa (Resin), Khadira, Palasa and barks of Arjuna and (one part of) milk. 2-4.

गृध्रोलूकपुरीषाणि बस्तगन्धामहेस्त्वचः । निम्बपत्राणि मधुकं धूपनार्थं प्रयोजयेत् ॥ ५ ॥

धारयेदपि लम्बाञ्च गुञ्जां काकादनीं तथा ॥ ६ ॥

Dungs of an owl and a vulture, the cast-off skin of a snake as well as Ajagandha and Nimba leaves and Yasti-madhu should be used for fumigating purposes, and Lamba (Tiktalavu), Gunja and Kakadani should be worn ( as a charm) by the child. 5-6.

नद्यां मुद्गकृतश्चान्नैस्तर्पयेच्छीतपूतनाम्॥७॥ देव्यैर्देयश्चोपहारो वारुणी रुधिरं तथा ।

जलाशयान्ते बालस्य स्त्रपनञ्चोपदिश्यते ॥ ८ ॥

मुद्द्रौदनाशना देवी सुराशोणितपायिनी । जलाशयालया देवी पातु त्वां शीतपूतना ॥ ९ ॥

The goddess Sitaputana should be worshipped with the offerings of the preparation of rice and Mudga pulse (cooked together) as well as with Varuni wine and blood, and the child should be bathed near a river or a tank. The Mantra is as follows :- – “May the goddess Sitaputana, who is fond of the preparation of rice and Mudga pulse, who delights in drinking wine and blood and who resides by the side of a river or a tank, preserve thee.” 7-9.

इति सश्रुत संहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रे शीतपूतनाप्रतिषेधोनाम चतुस्त्रिंशोऽध्यायः ॥ ३४ ॥

Thus ends the thirty-fourth chapter in the Uttara-Tantra of the Susruta Samhita which deals with the medical treatment of an attack by) Sitaputana.
