त्रयोविंशोऽध्यायः अथातो नासागतरोगप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः, यथोवाच धन्वन्तरिः भगवान् ॥ १ ॥
Now we shall discourse on the chapter which deals with the therapeutics of nasal diseases (Nasa gata Roga-Pratisedha). 1
Treatment of Apinasa and Putinasya
पूर्वोद्दिष्टे पूतिनस्ये च जन्तोः स्नेहस्वेदौ छर्दनं स्स्रंसनञ्च । युक्तं भक्तं तीक्ष्णमल्पं लघु स्यादुष्णं तोयं धूमपानञ्च काले ॥ २ ॥ हिङ्गु व्योषं वत्सकाख्यं शिवाटी लाक्षा बीजं सौरभं कट्फलञ्च । उग्रा कुष्ठं तीक्ष्णगन्धा विडङ्गं श्रेष्ठं नित्यञ्चावपीडेकरञ्जम् । एतैर्द्रव्यैः सार्षपं मूत्रयुक्तं तैलं धीमान्नस्यहेतोः पचेच्च ॥ ३ ॥
Treatment of Apinasa and Putinasya – In cases of the firstmentioned disease (i.e.) Apinasa and in those of Puti-nasya, application of Sneha and of Sveda to the affected part, and application of emetics and purgatives should be made. The diet should be light and moderate in quantity. The water for drinking should be boiled before use, and inhalation of smoke (Dhuma-pana) should be indulged in at the proper time. Hingu, Trikatu, Indra-Yava, Sivati, 1 Laksa, Katphala, Vaca, Kustha, Sobhanjana, Vidanga and Karnja should be used daily with benefit in the manner of Avapida- Nasya. Mustard oil should be duly cooked with the aforesaid drugs together with cow’s urine and be used as an errhine (Nasya). 2-3.
Nasa paka

नासापाके पित्तहृत् संविधानं कार्यं सर्वं बाह्यमाभ्यन्तरञ्च | हृत्वा रक्तं क्षीरवृक्षत्वचश्च साज्याः सेका योजनीयाश्च लेपाः ॥ ४ ॥ वक्ष्याम्यूर्ध्वं रक्तपित्तोपशान्तिं नाडीवत् स्यात् पूयरक्ते चिकित्सा | वान्ते सम्यक् चावपीडं वदन्ति तीक्ष्णं धूमं शोधनञ्चात्र नस्यम् ॥ ५ ॥
Nasa-paka, etc.- In cases of Nasa-paka, all the Treatment of Pitta-subduing measures both for internal and external use should be duly employed. Barks of the Ksiri (milk-exuding ) trees mixed with clarified buttter should be duly employed as wash and plaster after a local bleeding. The medical treatment of Sonita – Pitta (Haemorrhaege ) from the nose shall be hereafter¹ described. A case of Puya-Rakta (discharge of bloody pus from the nose) should be treated as a case of sinus (Nadi) 2 for all practical purposes, and Avapida-nasya as well as inhalations of smoke (Dhuma) of keen potencied durgs and Nasya (Snuff or errhines) of drugs of correcting or purifying virtues should be used after the satisfactory exhibition of emetics. 4-5.
Treatment of Ksavathu and Bhramsathu
क्षेप्यं नस्यं मूर्धवैरेचनीयैर्नाड्या चूर्णं क्षवथौ भ्रंशथौ च ।
कुर्यात् स्वेदान् मूर्ध्नि वातामयघ्नान् स्निग्धान् धूमान् यद्यदन्यद्धितञ्च ॥ ६ ॥
दीप्ते रोगे पैत्तिकं संविधानं कुर्यात् सर्वं स्वादु यच्छीतलञ्च ॥ ७ ॥
Treatment of Ksavathu and Bhramsathu — Powders of headpurgaing drugs in the form of snuff should be administered into the nostrils through a pipe in cases of Ksavathu and Bhramsathu. The head should be duly fomented with Vayu-subduing drugs and inhalation of Sneha-Dhuma³ as well as similar other medicinal measures remedial to the deranged bodily Vayu should be resorted to. All the Pitta-subduing measures should be employed in a case of Dipta and all cooling remedies and the drugs of sweet taste should also be prescribed. 6-7.
Treatment of Nasa naha
नासानाहे स्नेहपानं प्रधानं स्निग्धा धूमा मूर्धबस्तिश्च नित्यम् । बलातैलं सर्वथैवोपयोज्यं वातव्याधावन्यदुक्तञ्च यद् यत् ॥ ८ ॥ नासास्रावे घ्राणतश्चूर्णमुक्तं नाड्या देयं योऽवपीडश्च तीक्ष्णः । तीक्ष्णं धूमं देवदार्वग्निकाभ्यां मांसं वाऽऽजं युक्तमत्रादिशन्ति ॥ ९ ॥

Treatment of Nasa-naha, etc.- The internal use of Sneha (Sneha-pana) forms the principal remedy in a case of Nasa-naha, in which fumigations with lardacious drugs as well as head-purgings may be likewise employed. The use of Bala-Taila or any other Vayusubduing remedy mentioned in the chapter on the treatment of Vatavyadhi (Ch. V. Chikitsa Sthana) may be similarly used with beneficial results. Powdered snuff should be introduced into the nostrils through a pipe or tube, and strong and keen Avapida-Nasya should be used in cases of Nasa-Srava. Strong fumes of (burnt) Deva-daru and Citraka should be applied to the affected part. Goat’s flesh is also found beneficial in such cases. 8-9.
Treatment of Nasa Sosa
नासाशोषे क्षीरसर्पिः प्रधानं सिद्धं तैलञ्चाणुकल्पेन नस्ये । सर्पि:पानं भोजनं जाङ्गलैश्च स्नेहः स्वेदः स्नैहिकश्चापि धूमः ॥ १० ॥
शेषान् रोगान् घ्राणजान् सन्नियच्छेदुक्तं तेषां यद्यथा संविधानम् ॥ ११ ॥
Treatment of Nasa-Sosa — The use of clarified butter churned out of milk, as well as that of the oil as an errhine prepared in the manner of Anu-taila are pre-eminently the best cures in a case of NasaSosa. Potions of clarified butter, meals with Jangala meat-soup, applications of Sneha and of Sveda, and fumigating the affected part with lardacious drugs may be similarly prescribed with best advantage. The remaining nasal diseases should be duly treated according to the specific treatment of each case as described before. 10-11.
