      Understanding the fundamentals

      What is Prakriti Parikshana?

Prakriti Parikshana is the Ayurvedic examination of a person's inborn constitution. According to Acharya Charaka, the proportion of Vata, Pitta and Kapha present at the moment of conception stays fixed for life and shapes everything from body build to temperament, digestion, immunity and disease tendency. Knowing your Prakriti is considered the starting point of any Ayurvedic diet, lifestyle or treatment plan, because what suits one constitution can aggravate another.

      The three doshas

Vata, Pitta & Kapha — explained

Every person carries all three doshas, but usually one or two are dominant. Here's what each governs in the body and mind.

      Vata

      Air + Space
      • Thin, light frame; dry skin and hair
      • Quick to learn, quick to forget
      • Irregular appetite and digestion
      • Light, easily disturbed sleep
      • Prone to anxiety and worry under stress

      Pitta

      Fire + Water
      • Medium build, warm skin, prone to freckles
      • Sharp intellect, strong opinions
      • Strong, sharp appetite and digestion
      • Moderate, sound sleep
      • Prone to irritability and anger under stress

      Kapha

      Earth + Water
      • Solid, well-built frame; smooth, oily skin
      • Slow to learn, but rarely forgets
      • Steady appetite, slow digestion
      • Deep, heavy, long sleep
      • Prone to attachment and lethargy under stress
      The clinical method

      How is Prakriti traditionally determined?

Classical texts list several factors an Ayurvedic physician examines together, beyond a simple questionnaire:

SaraWhich tissue (blood, muscle, fat, bone) is naturally dominant
SamhananaCompactness and stability of the body
      PramanaBody measurements and proportions
SatmyaFoods and habits the person is naturally suited to
      SatvaMental strength and tolerance
      AharashaktiDigestive capacity
      VyayamashaktiExercise capacity
      BalaNatural immunity

This is exactly why the Prakriti Parikshana test above is a helpful starting reference, while an in-person consultation — including pulse (Nadi Pariksha), tongue and skin examination — gives the most reliable result.

      Frequently asked

      Prakriti Parikshana — FAQs

It's the Ayurvedic process of identifying your inborn Vata-Pitta-Kapha constitution, fixed at conception, used to personalise diet, daily routine and treatment.

Seven: Vata, Pitta and Kapha as single-dosha types; Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha and Vata-Kapha as dual-dosha types; and a rare Tridoshaja type where all three are nearly balanced. Most people are dual-dosha.

It's a solid starting reference, but a certified Ayurvedic doctor also checks pulse, tongue, skin and body proportions in person for a fully accurate reading.

Prakriti is your unchanging birth constitution. Vikriti is your present-day imbalance caused by diet, season or stress, and it can shift — Ayurvedic care aims to bring Vikriti back toward Prakriti.

No, Prakriti stays fixed for life. Only Vikriti, your current state of balance, changes and can be managed through diet, Dinacharya (daily routine) and Ritucharya (seasonal routine).
